Historic Plates Registration

Registering a historic vehicle. (H – Plates)

  • For a vehicle to be eligible for Conditional Registration (H – Plates) the owner must be a financial member of a Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) recognised historic vehicle club.
  • The registration fee includes an administration fee, number plate fee and CTP insurance. However, you should be aware that this insurance only covers you on roads or road-related areas (eg footpaths, nature strips, public driveways, public carparks etc), but not on private property. RMS,
  • Visit the Bush Council’s website “How to register you heritage vehicle” (H-Plates).
  • The vehicle must be at least 30 years old based on a calendar year.
  • The vehicle must be in roadworthy condidtion and must be unmodified as described in the RMS Historic Vehicle Policy. (Safety items such as seatbelts, indicators, etc are allowed to be added).
  • In the first instance the vehicle must be presented to the Club’s Technical and Safety officers for inspection for roadworthiness, authenticity and originality. Unlike presenting for full registration the unregistered vehicle must not be driven on the road for this inspection.
  • “Secondary clubs” ie other historical vehicl clubs to which the member belongs, must be listed on the RMS 1269 form at the time of inspection.
  • If passed, the paperwork may be presented at the RMS office for formal registration. However, the now-registered vehicle may not be used on the road until comprehensive insurance papers have been sighted by the plates registrar.
  • The vehicle must be subsequently be presented at the Club Registration Day irrespective of when the registration falls due.
  • The vehicle immediately becomes unregistered if the owner ceases to be a financial mlember of the club.
